India Advances Historic Measure on Women Lawmakers

In India, lawmakers have approved a measure that would designate one-third of all legislative seats for women. Supporters of the bill call it a move to address decades of male dominance of India’s political affairs. The measure now faces a vote in India’s lower house of parliament, where it’s expected to be approved.

Utah Gov. Signs Anti-Abortion Measure

In Utah, Governor Gary Herbert has signed into law a new anti-abortion measure that could punish women for having a miscarriage. The Republican-backed bill would allow women to be charged with murder if they commit “an intentional or knowing act” that causes a miscarriage. The bill initially included language that would have also punished women for “reckless” acts. But despite the revision, critics still say the measure could target women for all kinds of actions, including staying with an abusive partner.

Psychotherapists say it’s not only naughty but counterproductive to blame others for your problems. A skilled practitioner urges her clients to accept responsibility for the part they’ve played in creating their predicaments. The reason is as much pragmatic as it is ethical: When you’re obsessed with how people have done you wrong, you have little ambition to change the behavior in yourself that led you into the mess.

While I endorse this approach, I also know that dogmatic adherence to it can warp your mental health as much as any other form of fanaticism. That’s why I urge you to enjoy an unapologetic Blame Fest.

Choose a time when you will find fault with everyone except yourself. Howl in protest at the unfair slights people have committed against you. Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued a memo this week announcing the war in Iraq will be re-branded as “Operation New Dawn.” Gates wrote the name change marks “a strong signal that Operation Iraqi Freedom has ended and our forces are operating under a new mission.” Operation New Dawn shares the same name as the November 2004 US attack on Fallujah that killed hundreds of Iraqi civilians and displaced thousands more.

Of all the symbols in the world, the swastika is the most horrendous. As the logo for Hitler’s Nazi movement, it will forever smack of evil. But it didn’t used to be that way. India Blocks Sale of Monsanto GM Crop

India has put a halt to plans to allow genetically modified eggplant from the agri-giant Monsanto to be sold on the Indian market. On Tuesday, the Indian government reversed a decision to allow Monsanto to sell its eggplant crop, known as Bt Brinjal. It would have been India’s first genetically modified food crop and the world’s first commercially cultivated genetically modified vegetable.
